Peru is best-known for the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu, but it also boasts several world-class museums that showcase the country’s rich historical, archaeological and cultural heritage. Their impressive collections have been brought to life by an incredible team of curators and private collectors, who work passionately to preserve these priceless treasures for future generations.

Our Trip Coordinator, Claudia Coral, who lives in the capital city of Lima, has handpicked her top 10 museums in Peru that you shouldn’t miss during your exploration of this fascinating country.

1 Larco Museum, Lima

Ancient Peruvian history

The Museo Larco, located in Lima’s Pueblo Libre district, was founded in 1926 by Rafael Larco Hoyle, a pioneer in Peruvian archaeology. The museum is housed within a viceroyalty mansion amid beautiful gardens.

Step inside and travel back more than 5,000 years to ancient Peru. The Museo Larco’s impressive private collection includes around 45,000 exhibits. Its lovingly presented sculptures, ceramics, and jewelry provide a fantastic overview of the various pre-Columbian civilizations. A particularly interesting highlight is the museum’s collection of erotic Moche ceramics.

Insider tip: After your visit, unwind at the museum’s charming garden café, where you can enjoy a coffee or light lunch surrounded by bougainvillea bushes.

Claudia Coral

You should visit one of the historic taverns in the Pueblo Libre district. I recommend El Bolivariano or La Antigua Taberna Queirolo. Treat yourself to a classic Pisco Sour or Chilcano and sample some typical Peruvian dishes

2 Lima Art Museum (MALI)

Art and Architecture

Situated in the historic centre of Lima, the Palacio de la Exposición is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. It was built in 1869 as a venue for art and industrial exhibitions, and has housed the Museo de Arte de Lima – MALI (Museum of Art in Lima – MALI) since 1961.

The museum’s collection is organized according to the different periods of Peruvian history – pre-Columbian, colonial, republican, and modern. In addition to paintings and photographs, its 17,000 exhibits include ceramics and textiles from pre-Hispanic times and furniture from the colonial period.

Insider tip: Don’t miss ‘La Noche del Museo‘ (Museum Night), which is held on the last Friday of every month. The museum transforms into a vibrant stage for art, music, and dance. This is a wonderful way to experience Lima’s vibrant art scene up close.

3 Amano Museum, Lima

Pre-Columbian textile art

The modern Museo Amano in the Miraflores district is considered one of the best museums in Peru for pre-Columbian textile art. Here, you can marvel at a wide range of fabrics, fashion, and colorful designs.

The museum was founded in 1964 by Japanese businessman Yoshitaro Amano. During his travels through Peru, he came across a large number of objects left behind by grave robbers and recognized their great cultural significance. From then on, he devoted much of his time and financial resources to recovering and preserving these cultural assets. Over the years, he assembled a collection of approximately 30,000 pieces, primarily textile art.

Insider tip: You can finish exploring this museum in about two hours, leaving you enough time to wander through Miraflores. Take a stroll to the pier or relax in one of the area’s scenic green parks.

4 Pedro de Osma Museum, Lima

Viceroyalty-era art and heritage

Housed in a magnificent early 20th-century mansion, the Pedro de Osma Museum boasts the most important private collection of Viceroyalty-era art in Peru. Eleven thematically arranged rooms showcase large frescoes, paintings, sculptures, silverwork, and early Andean art.

Architecture enthusiasts will also find much to admire here. The French-style building features stained-glass windows, tin ceilings, and crystal chandeliers. In April 2024, it was awarded UNESCO’s ‘Blue Shield’ designation, underscoring its importance as a cultural heritage site.

Claudia Coral-Trip Coordinator

Combine your museum visit with a stroll through the bohemian Barranco district. Along the way, stop to admire the view at the iconic Bridge of Sighs. The Puente de los Suspiros has inspired countless works of art. From there, follow the Bajada de Baños, a scenic path that leads downhill to a viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Lima and right up to the beaches of Barranco. While you’re in the area, don’t miss Isolina, one of the city’s most popular restaurants for traditional Criolla cuisine. Their portions are quite generous and perfect for sharing.

5 Museum of Italian Art, Lima

The museum is housed in an early 20th-century building donated by the city’s Italian community. It is the only museum in Peru dedicated to European art. This small but remarkable museum displays paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and ceramics by Italian artists from the early 20th century.

Insider tip: The museum is located directly opposite MALI. Together, they make a delightful pairing for art and architecture enthusiasts.

The Carmelite Monastery (Monasterio de las Carmelitas Descalzas de San José) in the center of Arequipa dates back to 1710. The monastery has collected paintings, sculptures, furniture, gold and silverware, decorative arts, murals, and everyday objects from various eras. In 2005, the monastery opened a museum to make its amazing collection of artifacts accessible to the public.

Insider tip: Some exhibition rooms close during lunchtime for prayer. While you won’t see the Carmelite sisters, you can hear them singing and praying through the doors, a truly special experience! Also, don’t miss the delicious pastries made by the nuns. You can buy them at the sweet shop near the museum entrance.

7 Machu Picchu Museum, Cusco

The Museo Machu Picchu Casa Concha houses around 360 archaeological artifacts that Hiram Bingham removed from Peru in 1912 following his excavations at Machu Picchu and sent to Yale University. After years of negotiations, they were returned to Peru in 2011. Today, the museum’s permanent exhibition showcases these beautiful artifacts that offer a remarkable glimpse into ancient Incan culture.

Insider tip: The old black-and-white photographs taken by Hiram Bingham during the excavation of Machu Picchu are particularly fascinating.

8 Cao Museum & Huaca Cao Viejo, Trujillo

The Treasures of ‘Señora de Cao’ and the Magic of ‘El Brujo’

This museum outside Trujillo, on Peru’s north coast, houses the remains and funerary offerings of the first known female ruler from pre-Hispanic times. The ‘Señora de Cao’ was discovered in 2005 by Peruvian archaeologist Régulo Franco in Cao Viejo, one of the four sacred sites (‘huacas’) at the El Brujo archaeological complex.

As the first archaeological evidence that women in Moche culture could hold both political and religious power, the discovery of the Lady of Cao caused a sensation!

Claudia Coral-Trip Coordinator

The museums and sights in the north require a bit more logistical effort, but they are well worth a visit if you can set aside time to explore the region.

Insider tip: The eye-catching museum building is designed to resemble a Moche pyramid. As you wander through its winding corridors, you’ll encounter one surprise after another!

10 LUM Memorial Museum, Lima

History of the 1980s Shining Path insurrection

LUM (Lugar de la Memoria, la Tolerancia y la Inclusión Social) commemorates the armed conflict that erupted in Peru in the 1980s and 90s between the government and guerrilla groups such as the Shining Path.

It documents the testimony of thousands of witnesses, from civilians to victims of attacks to military personnel. The museum includes a permanent exhibition, a historical archive, and temporary exhibitions.

Africa is renowned for its fantastic wildlife and vast savannas, but it also boasts some truly stunning islands. Whether you’re seeking an idyllic escape or the perfect place to unwind after a memorable safari adventure, they tick all the right boxes.

From private beach lounges to a personal butler attending to your every need, these island retreats promise a luxurious stay in harmony with nature. Here are five of our favorite hidden gems, where you can enjoy a more intimate and exclusive experience.

1 Fanjove Island, Tanzania

Best time to visit: June to March

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul
Laba Fanjove Island

Fanjove is the smallest of the five islands in the Songo Songo archipelago, and you can explore the entire island in about an hour!

The eco-friendly Laba Fanjove Island resort is just an hour’s flight from Dar es Salaam. Each villa has been built using locally sourced materials like teak, palm leaves and coral stone.

Best things to do: Relax on the veranda of your private villa, soaking in the ocean views and beautiful sunsets. You can also go snorkeling, kayaking, and birdwatching, and enjoy a romantic evening cruise on a traditional dhow.

Our most enchanting moment: Being ‘welcomed’ by a group of spinner and bottlenose dolphins as your boat approaches the island.

2 Denis Private Island, Seychelles

Best time to travel: All year round, but April to October is ideal

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul
Denis Private Island

If you truly want to get away from it all, we recommend the idyllic Denis Island. With no cell signal, no Wi-Fi in the rooms, and no cable TV, this private island in Africa offers pure, unplugged relaxation.

The villas of this secluded resort, with their handcrafted furniture and polished wooden floors, reflect the Seychelles’ colonial heritage. The open-air bathrooms and private garden courtyards immerse you more deeply in your natural surroundings.

Best things to do: Try your hand at fishing, follow turtle tracks along the beach, or explore the island’s scenic trails by bicycle or on foot.

Our most enchanting moment: Spotting rare endemic birds such as the Seychelles magpie-robin and the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher during a walk around the island.

3 Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

Best time to visit: June to March

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul
&Beyond Mnemba Island

The private island of Mnemba offers powder-soft white sands, crystal-clear waters, and is perfect if you love diving and snorkeling.

&Beyond Mnemba Island has 12 open-plan bandas (beach bungalows) that are designed to reflect the region’s rustic charm. Every bungalow also comes with its own private beach lounge that gives you direct access to the shore.

Best things to do: Keep an eye out for shy dolphins in the shallows, or take part in conservation projects like coral restoration and artificial reef building.

Our most enchanting moment: Watching the hatchlings of the rare green sea turtles emerge from their eggs on the beach.

4 Benguerra Island, Mozambique

Best time to visit: April to October

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul
Azura Benguerra Lodge

If you’re seeking the ultimate relaxation, head to the remote islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. The region is home to some of Africa’s most pristine coral reefs, and feels like a luxurious oasis at the edge of the world.

The Azura Benguerra Island Lodge is located on the archipelago’s second-largest island, Ilha de Benguerra. Each of its 20 individually designed villas comes with its own private pool and butler service, ensuring absolute privacy and comfort for you.

Best things to do: Marvel at the colorful marine life of Two-Mile Reef, spot turtles on Paradise Island, and witness the humpback whale migration, which takes place between July and September.

Our most enchanting moment: The helicopter ride from Vilanculos is a visual treat! Soar over vast sandbanks and take in the Indian Ocean shimmering in every shade of blue.

5 Mangénie Island, Mauritius

Best time to visit: All year round, but May to November is ideal

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

Located on the pristine east coast of Mauritius. the private island of Ilot Mangénie is part of Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa. Gaze out at the picturesque Trou d’Eau Douce Bay from the resort’s secluded beach, rejuvenate yourself in its tranquil spa and savor exceptional meals at the beachfront restaurant.

We recommend the Frangipani suites, which are set on a private islet, include butler service, and offer exclusive access to an adults-only pool.

Best things to do: Admire your scenic surroundings on an e-bike ride, or enjoy a guided tour to explore the island’s mangrove ecosystems along the coast.

Our most enchanting moment: Teeing off on the scenic 18-hole golf course at Ile aux Cerfs, which is just off the coast.

While there are many international hotel chains in the Maldives, we also love supporting resorts that are owned by local families.

Sun Siyam’s journey began in 1998, when Ahmed Siyam Mohamed opened his first hotel, Vilu Reef. Today, the brand has grown to include five properties in the Maldives and one in Sri Lanka. What sets them apart and unites them is the warm hospitality of their team, many of whom have been with Sun Siyam group since the beginning.

We recommend: Experience exceptional guest service at Sun Siyam Iru Veli, a premium all-inclusive resort. Enjoy a professionally guided wine tasting session or learn the art of fishing from a local fisherman.

Venice’s reputation as one of the most romantic cities in Europe is well-deserved. Lovers from around the world never seem to tire of a good old-fashioned, romantic gondola ride with a serenading boatman. Though packed with grand buildings, Venice is not just a journey back in time. It thrums with the energy of art, music, and opera. Cross the bridge from the Scottish mainland to the Isle of Skye, and you are transported into a magical world. With plenty of scope for leisurely walks amidst breathtaking landscapes, Skye is the ultimate place for an intimate getaway. The charm of this island is that it is tucked away from the rest of the world.

Explore the fishing town of Portree and the area’s unique geological formations, steeped in myth, legend, and folklore. Sit by the bayside, sharing a plate of fish and chips with your partner, and watch boats glide by. As night falls, B&Bs with warm fireplaces and comforting meals dominated by fresh seafood beckon. If you’re looking to renew your vows or celebrate a special day, consider the hauntingly beautiful Eilean Donan castle nearby; it’s dramatically set at the confluence of three great lochs.

On this route there are many dreamy villages to explore, but none as charming as Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Day-trippers throng to its churches, museums, and medieval town hall and enjoy fruity wines in barns converted into Gothic hotels.

Rothenburg’s true allure emerges after dark when flickering lamplights cast their magic spell. Add a special touch to your evening by taking a walking tour with a guide dressed as a night watchman, who will regale you with tales of the past, while leading you through winding alleyways and historic squares.

Europe’s allure, steeped in history and culture, speaks for itself—several European countries are among the most visited destinations in the world. If you want to get the most out of your Europe vacation, combining two or more countries is a great way to experience more of the continent’s diverse delights in a single trip.

With this in mind, we’ve curated four of our favorite country combinations, each of which offers a distinct perspective of Europe’s captivating charm. The best part is that they’re all just a short train ride or flight away from each other, allowing you to spend more time immersed in discovery and less time traveling.

1. Portugal and Spain

This is one of our favorite pairings! Spain is one of the most visited destinations in Europe, while Portugal is ideal if you’re looking to combine it with something off the beaten path. Together, they tick all the boxes for a truly enchanting vacation – rich history, fascinating cultural traditions and beautiful landscapes.

Spain, being the larger of the two, offers a more diverse mix of destinations, each with its own unique charm. Madrid is the seat of Spain’s royalty, and is renowned for its lively boulevards, museums like the Museo del Prado, and its fast-paced nightlife. The more laidback city of Barcelona is the epicentre of the country’s Catalan culture, and Seville’s architecture is a fascinating mix of Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance influences.

Portugal, while smaller, has a range of equally alluring attractions. The historic river city of Porto is known for being the birthplace of port wine, and is the gateway to the world-famous vineyards of the Douro Valley region. Sintra, a popular retreat nestled in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, is home to some very interesting monuments such as the colorful Pena Palace and the impressive National Palace of Sintra. If you love the outdoors, you will be mesmerized by the turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs of the Algarve region. Its beaches are also regarded as among the most beautiful in the world.

2. Italy and Greece

This is a true Roman holiday in every sense of the word! Italy was the heart of the mighty Western Roman empire, while Greece was a key province of the Eastern Roman Empire. Italy is high on many travel bucket lists, and with good reason! The country is renowned for its magnificent cities—Rome, Florence and Venice—fabulous art, and iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Its culinary delights, ranging from pizza and lasagna to tiramisu, make Italy a top destination for food lovers as well.

The idyllic islands of Greece, with their more laidback atmosphere, amazing beaches and beautiful landscapes, are the perfect complement to your breathtaking exploration of Italy. They also offer a more authentic experience of Greek culture through scenic hikes, walking tours and cooking classes. Crete is famous for its ancient ruins, and you can delve into Greek island life at the traditional villages of Naxos. The charming towns and Cycladic architecture of Paros make it an alluring option. If you prefer something more lively, you can always head for Mykonos, the famous ‘party island’!

Italy and Greece Vacation Idea

Our recommended route blends a more active exploration of Italy with a leisurely, offbeat Greek island sojourn. You can begin your journey in Rome and move on to Florence. If you want a break from the city experience, you can stay at a quaint property in the scenic Tuscan countryside and make day trips to Florence. This is an especially great customization if you love food, wine and the outdoors.

Next, delve into Greece’s rich history at Athens, before heading for the serenity of the Greek islands. Unwind on one of their amazing beaches, embark on scenic boat trips to discover secluded coves, and tour their vineyards and olive oil groves. You should definitely try Greek wines during your time here. Fun fact – Most wines produced in America use French and Italian grapes, while Greek grapes are rarely used.

Enjoy hiking through the countryside, stopping at charming villages to chat with the locals and savor the region’s cuisine. At Naxos and Paros, you can also experience a traditional cooking class and learn how to prepare a few Greek delicacies under the guidance of an expert chef.

Note: At the time of writing, Santorini has been experiencing earthquake-like tremors. Our experts can advise you further while planning your visit.

3. France and Switzerland

This pairing is a fabulous blend of history, culture and landscapes. From the majestic Palace of Versailles and the incredible art collection of the Louvre to the grand chateaus of the Loire Valley, France is a treasure trove of architectural and artistic delights. Its museums, culinary traditions and historical sites are a testament to the pivotal role France played in shaping Europe’s heritage.

Switzerland’s stunning natural beauty makes it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and a great choice to round off your vacation after a wonderful week spent exploring France’s culture. Whether you are seeking serenity or a little adventure, you will be enchanted by the country’s towering Alpine mountains, pristine lakes, and charming villages. Despite its small size, Switzerland is also quite culturally diverse, with three linguistically distinct regions – German, French and Italian.

We recommend starting your journey in Paris. In addition to uncovering its rich history at landmarks such as the Palace of Versailles, there are a lot of interesting day trip options to choose from. You can visit the infamous World War Two beaches of Normandy, the elegant castles of the Loire Valley region, and the vineyards of Burgundy. Next, head for Lyon, the culinary capital of France, where you can enjoy traditional cooking classes and personalized food tours.

From Lyon, it’s a short hop to pretty Geneva and then incredible Interlaken. We can recommend some beautiful properties in the Swiss countryside that are close to both of these destinations, where the crowds are fewer and the views are just as breathtaking. Soak in the beauty of your surroundings on leisurely hikes and boat trips. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can try rafting and night sledding.

4. European Capitals (Budapest, Vienna and Prague)

If you are a history lover and feel like exploring a side of Europe that few others visit, this is the one for you! This multi-country European tour takes you through three of the continent’s hidden gems- Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic.

Budapest originated a Roman settlement, was in and went on to become an important hub of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The city is home to fabulous landmarks such as the grand Buda Castle, the iconic Chain Bridge, and the majestic Parliament Building. It is divided into two distinct parts by the Danube. Buda’s medieval buildings and cobblestone streets give it a historic charm, while Pest is known for its cultural institutions and vibrant nightlife. During your time in Budapest, we recommend visiting one of its famous ‘ruin bars’, which are bars that operate out of old abandoned buildings!

Vienna is a fabulous showcase of Europe’s rich cultural heritage, imperial history and grand architecture. The former capital city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire brims with historical landmarks like the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, the majestic Hofburg Palace, and the stunning St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Some of the world’s most famous composers – Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss, produced many of their finest works in Vienna. The city also has a vibrant coffee house culture, where you can savor traditional pastries and a steaming cup of coffee while watching the world go by.

Prague is known as the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’, and its skyline is dotted with Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque buildings. Its location made it a key part of the Holy Roman Empire. Prague went on to become the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom, and it was also a major power centre during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its most famous landmark is the massive Prague Castle, which is among the largest ancient castles in the world. There is also the historic Charles Bridge on the Vltava River that connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town.

A Local’s Guide to Buenos Aires https://www.enchantingtravels.com/travel-blog/a-locals-guide-to-buenos-aires/ Wed, 05 Feb 2025 11:12:13 +0000 https://www.enchantingtravels.com/?p=56040 Tobias lived in Buenos Aires for five years, and now visits every year to meet friends and family. Read on to discover his top tips for experiencing the city like a local.

The post A Local’s Guide to Buenos Aires appeared first on Enchanting Travels.

]]>

Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina, is a city of superlatives and striking contrasts. Its towering urban canyons and bustling traffic blend seamlessly with the melancholic rhythms of tango and the charmingly old-fashioned manners of its people. The spirit of this port city mirrors the intricate, dynamic compositions of Astor Piazzolla—unconventional and full of flair.

It is renowned for being the birthplace of tango, Pope Francis, and the legendary Diego Maradona. No description of Buenos Aires would be complete without mentioning its fiery soccer obsession, which few other cities can match, even in the soccer-crazy continent of South America!

Tobias’s Top Things to Do in Buenos Aires

1. Admire its Fabulous Architecture

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

Many of the city’s most beautiful buildings and monuments were built during the period when Argentina was one of the wealthiest countries in the world. There is the imposing Congreso de la Nación (Congress Building), and right next to it you will find the elegant Confitería del Molino. This is a superb example of an Art Nouveau building with a tower, elaborate stained glass windows and the eponymous windmill wings.

If you stroll just 500 meters down the Avenida de Mayo towards the Casa Rosada, you will reach the eclectic-style Palacio Barolo, which is conceptually inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Other lesser-known magnificent buildings in the center are the Edificio Otto Wulff, “supported” by stoic atlases, the Centro Naval, the Gothic Facultad de Ingeniería and the pumping station (Palacio de Aguas Corrientes), which is decorated with 300,000 terracotta tiles! If you are a book lover, you must visit the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookshop, which is housed in a former theater dating from 1919.

After admiring the Argentine National Library, head over to the famous Cementerio de la Recoleta. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world, and is the final resting place of figures such as Eva Perón, former presidents, Nobel Prize winners and senior military officers. Just opposite the cemetery, in front of the famous Café La Biela, is a historic rubber tree (Gomero de la Recoleta), which is said to have been planted in 1781!

You can combine your visit to the cemetery with a walk or bike ride in the city’s green spaces. Between the Parque Rosedal and the Japanese Garden, you will come across landmarks such as the planetarium and Floralis Genérica, an interesting kinetic flower sculpture.

2. Tango and Theater

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

Witnessing an opera or ballet performance at the Teatro Colón, one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, is a truly enchanting experience. Just two streets away, you will find Avenida Corrientes, which is also known as the “Broadway of Buenos Aires”, and is lined with numerous theaters and cinemas. Take a stroll along the “street that never sleeps” in the evening and let yourself be carried away by the vibrant atmosphere of your surroundings.

If you want to experience Argentina’s iconic tango culture like a local, you can step into one of the city’s many dance halls. There is El Beso, which has daily afternoon and evening milongas (dance events), and Salón Marabu, a 70-year old establishment. If you feel like dancing but don’t have a partner, La Catedral has professional dancers that can accompany you! The lively Café de los Angelitos features tango performances, and there is also the very rustic El Boliche de Roberto.

3. Stroll through San Telmo and La Boca

The colorful neighborhoods of La Boca and San Telmo are also worth a visit. La Boca was once inhabited by sailors and dock workers. Today, the area is famous for its brightly painted houses, and for being the home of the popular Boca Juniors soccer team. While here, it is advisable to avoid the side streets and instead stick to the touristy parts of the area – the Caminito, a vibrant pedestrian street, the Fundación Proa (centre for contemporary art) and the Bombonera (the Boca Juniors soccer stadium).

If you decide to buy a souvenir during your exploration, make sure to ask about the price before expressing that you want to buy it. This advice is especially relevant in antiques markets such as the Feria de San Telmo.

Discover Luján

Luján is a pilgrimage site located to the west of Buenos Aires, and is known for its neo-Gothic twin-tower basilica. One of the city’s more unusual attractions is Terra Santa, a Christian theme park, where Christ’s life is recreated through daily re-enactments of the crucifixion and resurrection.

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

A slice of the pampas

For a short excursion within the city center, a biking or hiking tour through the 350-hectare Reserva Ecológica is highly recommended. The vegetation of this wetland biotope is comparable to the pampas region, and rests on the rubble of what was once a bustling leisure hotspot in the 1930s. Pro tip: Remember to bring your hats and sunscreen, because there is very little shade here.

Tobias’s Top Culinary Experiences

1. A Cup of History

Buenos Aires is known for its deep-rooted coffee culture. Go back in time as you step into one of the city’s old coffee houses, with their hand-painted signs, wood-paneled counters, antique chandeliers, and yellowing photographs. Enjoy a cup of café con leche y medialuna (coffee with milk and croissant) in the majestic Confitería La Ideal, the traditional Los Galgos or the tiny La Poesía.

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

If you are near Avenida Corrientes, you can try he freshly ground coffee of Café El Gato Negro. The working-class district of Boedo is also home to several quaint establishments such as Café Margot.

2. Snacks and Sweet Treats

If you crave something refreshing (and sweet) during your wanderings, stopping by an ice cream shop like Rapanui or Scannapieco for a Helado de Dulce de Leche is highly recommended. This milk caramel-based ice cream is an undisputed classic among Argentinians. The Sicilian pistachio ice cream at Cadore is also delicious!

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

For masterfully mixed cocktails and sophisticated snacks, you can head for Milión. This beautifully restored villa with its romantic courtyard is an oasis of calm, especially on warm summer evenings. The Florería Atlántico, located behind the refrigerator door of a flower shop in the Retiro district, is another atmospheric bar offering a selection of unusual cocktails.

3. Fluffy Pizzas and Flavorful Grills

Argentina’s cuisine has been significantly influenced by Italian and Spanish migrants who arrived in large numbers during the late 19th century. However, Argentinian pizza is very different from the original Italian recipe, in that it is fluffier and contains a lot more cheese! You can enjoy a slice of mozzarella pizza in traditional eateries such as El Cuartito or at the gigantic Pizzería Güerrín.

Colectivos: A Great Way to See Buenos Aires

If you want to experience Buenos Aires like a porteño, why not travel like one? However, before you board a bus, you will need a Tarjeta SUBE, the contactless payment card for local public transport. These blue plastic cards can be purchased at subway station ticket counters or from lottery vendors (Lotería de la Ciudad). You can also top up your balance there. A bus journey usually costs the about 0.42 US dollars.

Bus route number 29 is ideal for tourists, as it passes landmarks such as Caminito, the Casa Rosada, the Obelisk, the Teatro Colón and the Barrio Chino. Join the queue at the bus stop, and get on through the front door of the bus. Tell the driver your approximate destination, hold the card up to the electronic reader and off you go!

The Kingdom of Thailand is a wondrous and beautiful place which has a wealth of opportunities for travelers from every walk of life. You can expect warm hospitality, beautiful wildlife and nature, bustling markets, and world-class beaches and resorts.

Buzzing Bangkok

In Bangkok, the Thai capital, walk amongst the glistening temples and ancient palaces that coexist with a modern, developed city that has all of the amenities one could ask for. A major highlight of Bangkok is its renowned street food scene. Michelin stars have been awarded to several street vendors, which is a unique accolade for this type of dining experience. We can guide you through these narrow streets on our evening food tour, which also lets you experience the traditional taxi- a tuk tuk. Hang on tight and enjoy the ride!

Cultural Crossroads at Chiang Mai

The capital of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai, is another must-see. The city is at the cultural crossroads of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. This means that you will notice variations in the culture of the hill tribes as well as the area’s cuisine.

The elephant sanctuaries are highly recommended when traveling to this region. These animals have mostly been rescued from abuse in all parts of the world and have returned to their natural habitats in the jungles. Here, you can help feed and learn about the elephants. If you are willing, you can take a nice mud bath with them as well!

Beach Bliss in Krabi

Thailand boasts some of the world’s best beaches, but Railay Beach in Krabi stands out.

Heading down south, our favorite beach in all of Thailand is Railay Beach, located just off the Krabi mainland. This magical strip of land is only accessible by boat, and once the sun sets, you feel as if you have the place to yourself. You can go on a nature hike down to the Blue Lagoon, and for the more adventurous, the area boasts some of the best rock climbing in Southeast Asia.

We also highly recommend the Rayavadee resort here, which features unique two story villas dotted throughout the jungle. An awesome bonus is access to The Grotto restaurant, which is exclusively for guests staying at the resort. This beautiful restaurant is located underneath ancient limestone cliffs and sits upon a beach overlooking the Andaman Sea.

Here are our Top Tips for Traveling in Thailand:

 1. Temple wear – A majority of the people are devout Theravada Buddhists. While visiting temples, be sure to cover your knees and shoulders at all times.
 2. Local food – There is a huge discrepancy between local food and food meant for tourists. A good rule of thumb is that if a restaurant is full of locals and offers English and Thai menus, eat there!
 3. Spice levels – Thai food in general is spicier than what you might be used to. If you want to turn down the heat, simply say “Mai Ped”, meaning “not spicy” in Thai.
 4. Language – Thai is the main language but people from large cities and the younger generations speak English. It’s a great idea to learn basic Thai phrases; locals will be impressed and appreciative.
 5. Currency – The Thai baht is the national currency, which can easily be obtained at ATMs. You will need to carry some baht as small vendors may not accept cards.

Our Top Thai dishes to Try

Food in Thailand is very regionalized, depending on the ingredients and protein available in those particular areas.

No trip to Thailand would be complete without trying Pad Thai, the national dish of the country.

Pad Thai is a complex rice and noodle dish commonly found at street food stalls around the country. Bear in mind the dish is perhaps a bit different from your local Thai restaurant, so if you don’t like a more traditional seafood flavor, tell them to hold off the dried shrimp!

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

Northern Thai cuisine combines the flavors of the Golden Triangle (Laos, Myanmar and Thailand) which results in a fragrant, herb-infused dining experience. Local dishes that are must-haves are Khao Soi (a coconut cream based noodle soup) and Larb (spicy minced meat with regional herbs).

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

Across Central and Southern Thailand, you will notice that there are a lot more seafood based dishes, due to their proximity to the water. Eat like a local and try grilled snapper, which is a whole fish that is salted, stuffed with herbs and cooked over an open fire. A plethora of herbs and greens accompany this dish, as well as spicy sauces to top it off.

Peru: 10 Marvelous Museums with Soul

In Southern Thailand, curries are king. We recommend trying all of the flavors, especially the Panang Curry, which has a wonderful flavor profile. One of our favorite Thai dishes is Pad Krapow Gai, which is minced meat combined with shallots, bird’s eye chilis and a healthy helping of Thai holy basil.

We go on vacation for various reasons: to experience new cultures, for some adventure and fun, maybe to bond with family and friends in a relaxing environment, or just to tick a place off our bucket list. We come back from these trips happy, inspired and already planning the next vacation. We also come back to work, the stresses of daily life and a host of commitments. Our lives are so fast-paced with little time to truly take care of ourselves mentally and physically. But there is a type of vacation that can help rejuvenate and ground you by providing the self-care you need – a wellness experience.

At Enchanting Travels, we have handpicked the best wellness retreats in the world just for you. These luxury holistic destinations are devoted to helping you detox and connect with yourself as well as boosting your mental and physical health.

1 Ayurveda in Sri Lanka

There is no better place to enjoy an Ayurvedic retreat, than in the Indian subcontinent– where the ancient practice originated. Ayurveda is devoted to holistic well-being using nutrition, massages, exercise and meditation specially prescribed based on your body ‘dosha’ or constitution. At Heritance Ayurveda in Sri Lanka, not only can you immerse yourself in an Ayurvedic program, but you can experience it in a tranquil, beautiful property.

This is said to reduce stress, provide pain relief and help you find inner peace. There are several exceptional hotels nearby, such as The Retreat Hotel Blue Lagoon, so you can enjoy an extended wellness experience combined with a comfortable stay.

4 Spas at the Dead Sea

While traveling through Jordan, enjoy a plethora of experiences – desert safaris, visits to ancient ruins, tours of bustling cities, and walks in otherworldly landscapes. Your itinerary can also include beach visits and relaxing spa stays. The Kempinski Hotel Ishtar is located along the Dead Sea and promises a luxurious and pampering getaway.

The mineral rich waters of the Dead Sea have long been hailed for their curative and therapeutic powers. Considered to be the oldest natural spa in the world, it is said that even Cleopatra visited it. A dip in its salty waters will not only leave your skin soft and relax your muscles, but it is also said to boost your immunity.

While staying here, you can easily access the waters of the Dead Sea. At the hotel’s private stretch of beach, use the mud from the sea to remove impurities from your skin. Complete the experience with a visit to the hotel’s state-of-the-art spa where you can enjoy treatments including a sea salt scrub extracted directly from the Dead Sea and Thalgo sessions that use marine nutrients to revitalize your skin. The Kempinski spa is also known for its massages and facials, as well as its lymphatic and anti-cellulite treatments to balance your body and relax your mind.

5 Onsens in Japan

The natural hot springs of Japan, which are known as onsens, are an integral part of local culture. This isn’t only because of the wellness and the therapeutic powers of the water. A visit to a bathhouse in a hot spring is also about community and bonding.

Onsens are found throughout the country in scenic locales. Friends and families flock to bathhouses to dip in the mineral-rich waters which are said to help with body pain, skin disorders and more. As you take a long soak in the communal bath you feel your stress melting away and a sense of well-being envelop you. Afterwards you can wear the yukata, a light cotton kimono, and geta, elevated wooden sandals and wander around like the locals do.

Many hot springs also have traditional inns called ryokan, where you can stay overnight. While staying here, enjoy time in the onsen, take part in traditional activities, such as tea ceremonies and relish authentic Japanese cuisine. As part of our Japan tour that focuses on the country’s culture and practices, you can travel to the scenic mountain town of Kinosaki, known for its onsen and stay in a typical ryokan, such as Nishimuraya Honkan.

Whether you want a trip that involves therapeutic massages and spa treatments or one focused on yoga and meditation, we can tailor a wellness holiday just for you. If you want to learn about local culture while at the same time uplifting your body, mind and soul, we’ve got you covered.
